With Valentine’s Day coming up, we got to thinking about something near and dear to our hearts: marketing! The Jakes Group team shares some recent favorite advertising pieces and why we love them.

Progressive Insurance: “Methods” Commercial

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/PTs6UY1G9wM" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

It’s likely safe to say that car insurance is a dry or drab “adulting” topic for many people. Yet, Progressive gives us the opportunity to laugh at ourselves (and at our parents) with the “Dr. Rick” series of commercials. I appreciate the style and sense of humor.

Cadillac’s 2021 Super Bowl Ad

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/0KAlqthD6Gc" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I think this ad is effective because it introduces a younger demographic to GM’s iconic Cadillac brand. Plus, Tim Burton is one of my favorite filmmakers, Johnny Depp was my first true love, and Timothée Chalamet is the spitting image of my son Jacob (in both looks and personality) .

Match.com: “Match Made in Hell”

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/YPq23RWpgPM" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

This is an epic love story that keeps the laughs coming, making light of the dumpster fire that was 2020. With everything having such a serious tone throughout this past year, it was nice to take a moment and laugh at the ridiculousness of everything that happened back to back. This commercial was the only one that I watched all the way through and didn’t want to skip; it truly was a match made in Hell…

TIAA: “Childcare Runs Out”

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/tdLmWHQQ6os" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

This ad was created BEFORE the COVID-19 pandemic hit the U.S. It is certainly relevant even more so today! TIAA connects with working parents in a humorous and relatable way.

Mint Mobile Launch – “New ManageMint”

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/nvW5YS6iXPA" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The ad does so many things right. It features the extremely well-liked, highly personable celebrity majority owner, who has certainly become the face of Mint Mobile. Beyond Ryan Reynolds, this spot aligns very well with the brand positioning (i.e., Mint Mobile is a high-quality service on a mission to bring a high-value alternative to the masses). The brand’s star-powered, low-budget commercials get that point across very well.

Mint Mobile’s Untraditional Super Bowl Ad

Coincidentally, I chose a Mint Mobile ad as well! Mint recently opted to run this print ad instead of a Super Bowl commercial in order to pass on the subsequent savings directly to customers. In a recent interview, owner Ryan Reynolds explained that he wants the brand to be viewed as engaging rather than broadcasting. I think this is a clever and well-executed marketing piece, and it helps to position Mint as a more cutting-edge brand in the mobile carrier market.
